With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion, the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, on Tuesday, 29 January 2019 at 7 p.m., the Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God “of the Sign” will be visiting the St.George Church in Carlton.
Brothers and sisters, as we celebrate today the leave-taking of the Great Feast of the Cross, we’re once again confronted with the paradox of our salvation: the instrument of Christ’s death has become the means of His victory over sin and death.
The mystical reason why the year begins and ends with feasts of the Theotokos is that the All-Merciful God was pleased to begin and finalize His plan for the salvation of mankind from servitude to the devil and the torments of hell by the intercession of the Mother of God.
My dear brothers and sisters, today we receive this wonderful and glorious image, this proof through sign that Christ’s crucifixion was voluntary. We heard about it in the kontakion. We heard in the Synaxarion about how He was above Moses and Elijah, showing that He is above the prophets, as a sign to the Jews.
